Consulting on Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs)
Speaking and consulting services from the NCEO, plus
access to the NCEO's searchable database of members who are service providers
ESOPs are highly complex and regulated plans, with many pitfalls and potentially unexplored advantages for the unwary. To set up a plan, you need sound advice and seasoned professional advisors. At a minimum, closely held companies need an experienced ESOP law firm and an independent valuation expert; it is highly likely that others will enter the picture, such as a third-party administration firm to handle the ongoing operation of the plan. No organization such as ours can or should handle the actual creation or administration of your plan, but we do offer several key consulting resources:
- Free general advice for members: As a NCEO member, you can call or email us for advice. Over the past decades, for example, thousands of people have joined the NCEO when they are evaluating whether to have an ESOP, because they know they will be able to consult with our executive director and staff about what to do and where to go to do it. Others join at other times in the life cycle of their plan to gain our insights.
- Paid consulting: Whether or not you are a member, qualified staff can review what kind of plan to set up, what the issues are in creating an ESOP, how to communicate plans effectively, how to create ownership cultures, and other concerns. We can also do specific one-day training programs for inside fiduciaries or ESOP committees. Contact us for pricing.
- Speaking: The NCEO can send a qualified staff person to speak at your company, trade association, or other meeting. In all cases, we need at least to be reimbursed for travel costs. Generally, we would also request an honorarium to compensate us for our time as the NCEO is an entirely self-sustaining organization. These fees are negotiable.
- Access to service providers: NCEO members receive access to our searchable database of hundreds of service providers, located in the members-only area of this site. Members also receive advice on what kinds of providers they need and how to choose; they can call or email us or they can read the articles on this in the members area.
