Victor Aspengren has succeeded Mary Boettcher as the chair of the NCEO's board of directors as of today. Mary had been the chair of the NCEO's board of directors since 2019; as the chief steward of the organization's mission to help employee ownership thrive, Mary says, " I am grateful for the opportunity to have served as chair of this extraordinary organization for the past three years. What a tumultuous time period for any organization, and none displayed more strength, determination, and agility than the NCEO. NCEO staff continues to deliver outstanding critical educational resources and research to support our employee ownership community and their passion to serve and grow employee ownership is ever-present. I look forward to continuing to serve as immediate past chair on the board of directors for the next two years!"

When we started planning this year's conference, we knew we needed a health protocol system that would give people enough foresight to plan a trip many months in advance. Since people have widely different views on COVID safety, we decided that the best approach is to serve people who are more cautious, recognizing that we’d be asking some people to be more cautious than they felt necessary. We have many attendees in high-risk groups, and we also didn’t know what the COVID situation would be by the time April arrived. All of that seemed to argue for a conservative approach.

Since the February 1 release of the NBC News Now story “Instead of ‘I quit,’ workers at these companies say they’re staying put and reaping rewards,” inspired by new NCEO research supported by ESCA, the NCEO has received many inquiries from people wanting to know more and asking for ways they can easily share the information.

On February 1, the evening NBC News Now is running the story “When workers are owners, they often get better benefits and a chance to build wealth. Some even build million-dollar retirement accounts.” NBC News hosts a web version of their reporting that includes both the video segment and a text version by Gretchen Morgenson and David Paredes.

During the 2019 Employee Ownership Conference, 15 CEOs convened in a conference room (imagine that!) in the Pittsburgh Convention Center for an interest meeting that spawned the first cohort of the ESOP CEO Network.

The ESOP Finance Working Group started as a small group of members that met at the 2021 Employee Ownership Conference. As time went on, this group evolved away from solely forecasting and discussed a broad range of finance-related issues facing ESOP companies.

Sandy Kostouros’ (Morton Buildings) 2021 NCEO Annual Conference presentation inspired Lori Atone (TVF) to ask the NCEO to establish a creative coalition for employee-owners to collaborate on usable, replicable ideas and resources on communications while creating community and employee involvement.
