Last September, we had the privilege of seeing Gina Schaefer, the founder of ESOP-owned A Few Cool Hardware Stores, deliver the keynote address at our 2023 Fall Forum in Houston.

Jack Moriarty has announced the launch of Ownership America, a “public policy and grassroots advocacy organization founded to turn Americans into owners.” Founded by Jack Moriarty, who is now its director, Ownership America’s first efforts will focus on generating policy proposals and grassroots initiatives to help grow employee ownership.

The ESOP community has asked for a graduate-level course that will provide emerging consultants with the broad level of knowledge required of them, and the Beyster Institute is excited to announce a new academic course in partnership with the University of California, San Diego.

The Pennsylvania Center for Employee Ownership is pleased to announce that employee ownership legislation has successfully passed in the Pennsylvania House and is on to the Senate.

No area has been as much of a source of questions from ESOP companies than trustee and fiduciary matters.

The ESOP consulting community endeavors to advance employee ownership.  In a recent call of 70 leading ESOP consultants hosted by the Beyster Institute at the Rady School of Management at UC San Diego, we discussed why some ESOP transaction closing dates were delayed.

We owe it to our employee-owners to help them understand their business and the challenges it faces, especially as an ESOP company. We need their ideas, support, and effort. This is the essence of employee ownership. 

The well-known tile and homeware company Heath Ceramics announced that it was establishing an employee ownership plan.

When I first read about ESOPs 43 years ago as a Capitol Hill staffer, I loved the concept but was discouraged by the complexity. Employee ownership was a cause I wanted to make my own, but I was intimidated by the concept and strange (to me) language.

On March 29, the House passed the SECURE 2.0 Act (H.R. 2954), which makes two minor improvements for ESOPs plus other changes aimed at making it easier for employers and employees to assure retirement plans work more effectively. Some of these will affect ESOPs.
